The shift already underway

By 2030, technology is expected to displace 92 million jobs globally, while creating 170 million new ones. That net number sounds reassuring. What it hides is which 92 million roles go first: the ones built on applying a known method to a well-defined problem, precisely what school has spent a century training students to do well.

The pattern shows up earliest at entry level. A Stanford-based study found that employment in the most AI-exposed early-career roles has already fallen, while employment in the same roles for experienced workers has grown. In parts of Asia, the shift is concrete rather than theoretical: Indian IT services firms have cut entry-level hiring by 20 to 25 percent as automation takes over routine work.

Meanwhile, employers rank analytical thinking as the single most in-demand skill, ahead of any technical one. Not because thinking is becoming rarer. Because the decisions left for humans are becoming harder.

What this means for a 13 to 18 year old

AI already handles the tasks that follow a known method toward a predictable outcome faster and more consistently than a person can. It cannot decide which goal is worth chasing when the method runs out, what a good decision looks like in a genuinely new situation, or when to trust a judgment nobody else in the room has approved yet.

That gap is what will separate students who adapt from students who freeze. Coding classes and extra exam prep can’t close it on their own.
